With their crisp, textured crumbs contrasting with the warm, moist layer of stew fruit and spices, crumbles really are the most comforting of comfort foods. Typically, crumbles use soft fruits such as pears, plums, apples, or rhubarb, but berries can also be used. Crumbles are believed to have originated around the time of World War II, when the rationing of butter, flour, and sugar made pastry-based desserts a luxury.
